Maya CARE volunteers are educated working/retired professionals, homemakers or students who gladly perform all the activities a family member would. Thus, Maya CARE volunteers sit with patients in hospital/at home, read to them, give medicine/help with physiotherapy exercises under medical advice. For a comprehensive list of services, click here. In new cities, we start with the helpline number first. Such numbers are used both for recruiting volunteers and getting calls from senior citizens to provide them service. When we start working in a new city, we start taking applications from particular areas of that city that are accessible for our volunteers. In order to recruit more volunteers, we advertise the role on Facebook or other platforms alongside the helpline number. After receiving the applications, we check the applications thoroughly and decide which person is eligible to be a volunteer. We then proceed contacting them to understand how much time they can give.

Sometimes, volunteers can have job expectations. We must clarify that this is a charitable cause, thus we can't provide any job but they can consider it an opportunity to do social service. We do not pay volunteers and interns outside India as we cannot afford the minimum wage. However, we do offer to reimburse extra expenses ( e.g. travelling cost from their place to the place of service). The City coordinator notes down each day the cost of the volunteer and they are paid at the end of the month.

We are called by the senior citizen or their relatives on the helpline number for the service. We choose the volunteers based on their location to make sure that it is easy for them to reach the place easily and in a short time. We always keep one extra backup volunteer. For example: If there is a call in a certain area and volunteer 1 is not available due to some reason, volunteer 2 is sent to their place. This is essential to guarantee we will be available to provide help when needed.

After completing the service of the particular day, the volunteer informs the city coordinator that the assignment is done by sending a WhatsApp message.
